WELCOME TO THE LIBERATION TOUR
Summer 2022- Get ready for the Great American Road Trip
Who am I
HELLO FELLOW ADVENTURERS! My name is Parker. I am an Black, Plus Size woman that hikes and uses my social media platform to encourage others to get outdoors and to show representation for people like me in outdoor spaces. Using the handle @KweenWerk I explore the outdoor and talk about the importance of representation in outdoor spaces. KWEEN stands for Keep Widening Environmental Engagement Narratives. I am also the co-founder of Inclusive Journeys makers of the Inclusive Guide. The Inclusive Guide is a website that’s been described as “the new digital Green Book“ or “Yelp for inclusivity”. Inclusive Guide is a user review platform where users can rate businesses on a range of things, such as courtesy of staff, ADA compliance, sense of personal safety, availability of gender neutral bathrooms, and so on. Individual users can also access the reviews of others who have rated those spaces to easily identify locations that are safe and welcoming for them. The All American Summer Road Trip and Historic Black Travel Even though the summer road trip is a long held American tradition, people of color and specifically Black people, have not always felt safe making these journeys. Since the time of the Green Book Black inclusion and representation for Black people in travel has been a mixed bag. This summer I am on a mission to raise the visibility of Black people in travel and outdoor spaces. In an article published in Travel Weekly Martina Johnson founder of the Black Travel Alliance stated “Not only is it morally wrong that Black people aren’t better represented (in the travel industry), Johnson said, “but it’s also bad for business. I believe that African Americans would spend even more on travel if there were more Black people telling their story.” I agree with Martina, I believe representation of people of color in travel, parks and outdoor recreation is the key to encouraging the involvement of others in these activities. The Journey Starts June 23, 2022 This summer I will be traveling with my family to expereince the tradition of the cross country road trip. My mixed race family includes my husband and I and our 3 children ages 4, 6 and 10. We will be renting a R.V. to take a 17 day trip across the country from the west to the east coast and back. Along my journey I will also be using the Inclusive Guide to highlight the inclusive spaces and places I find along the way. |
